Sinusitis, Symptoms, Home Remedies and Homeopathy Treatment


Sinusitis is a swelling of the sinuses that can be caused by bacterial or viral infections and allergies. The sinuses are air filled cavities that are located behind the nose, forehead, and eyebrows and in front of the brain. When these sinuses are blocked with fluid,this result in pain and swelling.

How long does sinusitis lasts / types of sinusitis:

Depending on how long period it lasts in the body; it is termed as various types. They are:

  • Acute sinusitis: lasts up to a maximum of 4 weeks
  • Sub acute sinusitis: Lasts from 4 to 12 weeks
  • Chronic sinusitis: Lasts at least 12 weeks, or keeps coming back
  • Acute sinusitis:

    This is often caused by common cold. At this stage, mostly it can be treated by home remedies. If the sinusitis still persists, it leads to serious infections and complications. At this stage, patient's sinuses become swollen and inflamed, that stops the drainage and causes a build-up of mucus. This is otherwise called as acute rhino sinusitis.

    Subacute sinusitis:

    If the sinusitis lasts for more than 4 weeks, then it is termed as subacute sinusitis, symptoms may be similar to acute sinusitis.

    Chronic sinusitis:

    Lasts at least 12 weeks, or keeps coming back

    This is normally caused by infection and may result ingrowth of nasal polyps (soft, painless, noncancerous growths on the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses) as well as a deviated septum (cartilage that divides the nasal cavity in half) which often causes mucus build up, blockage and makes breathing difficult. The patient may experience facial pain and headache.


    We can notice having two or more of the below symptoms

  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge
  • Swollen nose and eyes,
  • Hard to breath withblocked nose,
  • Headache, tiredness and a high temperature (fever)
  • Facial pain and pressure,
  • Poor sense of smell, Cough, Congestion
  • vertigo

    Here are few Remedies you can follow to prevent or avoid getting sinusitis in some cases.

  • Avoid or Quit, Cigarette or cigar smoking in your home and work place. As Tobacco and Smoke causes irritation to membranes in your nose and sinuses.
  • Steam inhalation: Breathing steam for 5 to 10 minutes from a bowl of hot water, by covering body completely with towel or rug. Put few drops of menthol in the hot water just before breathing. Do it several times a day. This would mostly help in getting relief.
  • Don't stay in dry environments for long time. Use a humidifier at home and work location when needed to increase the moisture in the air.
  • Attach electrostatic filters to heating and air conditioning equipments (A/C's) so that the electrostatic filters help in removing allergens in the air.
  • Use nose mask when travelling outside
  • Wash your hands after meeting or after being contact with the people who have cold and other respiratory infections.
  • Wash your hands with soap
  • Drink plenty of fluids and water, as water increases the percentage of moisture in the body and helps in prevention of congestion.
  • Eating fresh vegetables and fruits that are rich in antioxidants helps in boosting your body immune system
  • Avoid excess consumption of dairy products like milk, as it thickens the mucus and causes the nasal passage to narrow down, that result in headache.
  • Nasal washes with salt water helps in keeping the nasal passages open and clean, as it washes out mucus and bacteria. Use boiled and then cooled water for nasal washes. You can also gargle often with warm water salt added to it. This helps in prevention of sore throat.
  • Treatment for Sinusitis:

    If the symptoms of the sinusitis still do not get reduced then it is the time to consult a doctor.
